Top Movies About Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) elements in movies have been around since the late 60’s (Think 2001: A Space Odyssey). Little did we know, these Hollywood blockbusters prepared us for a future of robots and advanced technology. What seemed impossible all those years ago, might be quite common today. Here are some of our favourite movies about artificial intelligence, in no particular order:

Ex Machina 

Ex Machina is one of the more recent films that include AI technology. It’s about a young programmer (Caleb) who wins a trip to his boss’s mountain retreat, where he’s tasked with testing a potentially sentient robot for humanlike intelligence. Caleb realises that the turing test is not enough, so he has to come up with more creative ways to prove the robot’s intelligence. Ex Machina gives a complicated look into AI and consciousness, and prepares us for the idea that we might need more complex measures than the Turing test.

I, Robot 

After an executive at a robotics company is murdered, a detective suspects that one of the company’s robots (Sonny) has gone rogue and committed the crime. The movie addresses Isaac Asimov’s three laws of robotics: 1) “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm; 2) A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law; 3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.” Sonny appears to have defied its programming, which is supposed to be impossible according to the laws of AI. However, Facebook recently cancelled an AI experiment when two robots started communicating with one another in a language only they could understand.

The Matrix

Imagine a world where we live in a simulated reality, while our bodies are sustained by machines created by sentient robots to subdue the human population. This is the premise of The Matrix. In the film, AI elements are presented in both software and hardware, and ‘machine learning’ is taken to a new level. Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk believes that a dystopian future like The Matrix is very possible, in fact, he believes we’re living in one already.

Her

Her is the only movie on this list that isn’t about ‘man vs machine’. The movie is about a lonely writer who falls in love with a sentient operating computer system (Think Siri with more personality and emotion). Her symbolises our attachment to technology and how connections could change in the modern age. The operating system is just a voice, but companion robots might be a thing of the future soon.

Terminator

The advancement of technology is great and all, but we should definitely take a step back when cyborg assassins are a possibility. Terminator was one of the most popular movies to scare us with the possibilities of AI. It may have even made a prediction: In one scene the AI defence network uses unmanned military drones to attack civilians. Military drones are now a scary reality, which proves that certain AI elements are not as farfetched as we think.
